Email To Friend Print Version | (TCI-GIS): The Women's Football League (WFL) mini tournament was deemed a roaring success by spectators that turned out to watch this season's opener.
In an effort to further develop the girls Under 20 Development Programme, the Women's League hosted the event this past Sunday, November 2nd at the TCIFA Academy Field on Providenciales.
Over 50 girls have been in training for the Academy Football Teams, and got the chance to showcase their skills in a succession of three matches. Games commenced at 4pm, through to 7pm, and saw the girls play against each other in two halves of 20 minutes; then in a match against the Grace Bay FC.
President of the Women's League Candace Hanchell said: "The WFL is happy to see the continued growth of the league; and welcome the increase in the number of young players and also the commitment of the senior players."
"There is real energy within the girls development programme right now," noted President of the Turks and Caicos Islands Football Association (TCIFA) Christopher Bryan, "which bodes well for our planned entry into the FIFA U20 Women's World Cup Qualifying Competition in 2009. "
Technical Director Matthew Green said that: "It was great to see so many young players watching and supporting each other during the games and with a more competitive and experienced team to play against they will only get better as the season progresses."
In addition, over 100 plus people turned out to watch the games, which bodes well for the season ahead.
Sunday's event showed just how far the Turks and Caicos Islands Football Association has come in the past 18 months with regards to the development of Women's Football. "The fact that we had almost forty Under 20 players participating, with more watching from the sides, shows that the future of Women's Football looks bright and that by next season we should be able to produce three under 20 Teams to play in the league," added Green.
With this mini-tournament, and other football league matches on the horizon, the TCIFA will continue to strive to make football, the World's most loved sport, the number one sport in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
The results of the games are as follows:
AFC Academy A 5-0 AFC Academy B AFC Academy B 0-4 Grace bay FC Grace Bay FC 0-1 AFC Academy A
