Last week saw the start of the popular U20 Girls Football league. Now in its second year, the league, sponsored by Central Storage gives an opportunity to young female players to participate against each other on a regional basis.
The league, which comprises four teams, is based on their geographical location, representing local communities in Providenciales. The teams are Five Cays FC, Blue Hills Sharks, Leeward Knights and the Long Bay Revolution.
The Turks and Caicos Islands Football Association (TCIFA) states that league is important, as it allows many young players to develop their skills so they are prepared to move up to the next step, which is a chance to play in the Women's Football League. With over 50 players registered, this is indicative of how popular the sport is with girls throughout the islands. What is more, a similar league on a slightly smaller scale will soon commence in Grand Turk.
At the end of the U20 Girls season, trophies will be given to the league winners and runners up as well as individual trophies for the league top goal scorer and overall league MVP. An MVP award will also be given for the best player on each team.
Games are played at the TCIFA Academy Field from 4.30pm every Friday. |
