(TCI-GIS) -- On Wednesday morning, at the Gustavis Lightbourne Sports Complex the TCI Sports Commission held a press conference for Wendrico Seymour, who was being sponsored by Digicel on a one year scholarship to further his career and education in Jamaica.

Turkera Rolle, Digicel Marketing Executive with Wendrico Seymour
The General Manager of Digicel TCI, E. Jay Saunders - explained how the idea came to fruition. “Digicel across the world and particularly in the Caribbean supports the communities they operate in. I’m sure you know the Jamaican athlete Usain Bolt. He was sponsored by the Digicel before becoming the World Class athlete that he is today; and now, particularly in the Turks and Caicos - we want to duplicate the success that Digicel Jamaica has with their athletes. We believe in the athletes and the education system in the TCI and we would like to put them together to ensure that the athletes of the Turks & Caicos get a shot at glory and a chance to represent the country in the Olympic and other Track & Field Championships. We believe Wendrico presented that opportunity, so this scholarship will hopefully get him the education and training need to accomplish these goals.”

The TCI Sports Commission has been working hard to develop sports in the TCI. Seymour is just the third athlete that the Sports Commission has helped to secure a scholarship.

Director of the Sports Commission Alvin Parker, said that “Over the years we have scene numerous athletes that had talent but fell short of being given the opportunity to further their careers. So we really appreciate Digicel for helping Wendrico keep his dream alive so one day he can become a World Class athlete. And maybe in the future we will see more athlete given the chance to further their education and careers.”

Wendrico Seymour was presented with a one year scholarship, a plane ticket to Jamaica, and a bag of school supplies. Seymour is the first in his family to get a chance to go aboard and further his studies. In respect of it all, Wendrico say: “I want to thank Mr. Saunders and Digicel for helping make my dream come true. I don’t want to let anyone done, I just want to go out there and make my country proud.”
