The Turks and Caicos Islands National Track and Field Team headed to St Lucia for the 2009 Carifta Games Wednesday.

After last year’s amazing performance by Wendrico Seymour brought home gold and silver medals, this years troupe looks to do that and more.

Seymour’s performance has inspired the entire country. Athletes throughout the TCI have been training intensely and after the recent Inter-High School Track and Field Championships, where local athletes showcased their talents, this led to the team of 17 persons comprising the National Team. This team, which consists of two athletes from Grand Turk, three from South Caicos and 12 from Providenciales, has two female athletes among their group.

Mario Daniels, personal trainer for Wendrico Seymour, a seven-year veteran specializing in field events, particularly jumping events, was named head coach for this year’s National Team.

Coach Daniels said: “ The team has been training very intensely for the last eight months; they are in great shape, and are prepared to represent the TCI and bring at home more medals this year.”

In attendance at the Providenciales International Airport for the departure for the National Team was  Premier Galmo Williams, who had these words of encouragement for the team: “Work hard, play together as a team and only hard work will bring great success.”
