Governor, Gordon Wetherell has signed the groundbreaking NHIP Bill into law which went into effect on June 29, 2009. The signing of the NHIP Bill formally establishes the National Health Insurance Board (NHIB) as a separate statutory body, which will manage the country’s National Health Insurance Plan (NHIP).

“The passing of this Bill is a landmark event for our country and for our region. It ensures that all the people of the Turks and Caicos Islands will have access to high quality health care at an affordable cost, in a manner that is sustainable for our country,” stated Royal Robinson, Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance and Health.

The National Health Insurance Plan is part of a comprehensive reform of the health system of the Turks and Caicos Islands. It will ensure that ‘everyone’ who comes to live and work in the Islands can get care at the new world-class health facilities currently being built in Provo and Grand Turk. The Turks and Caicos Islands now joins its European neighbors in ensuring that no one suffers financial hardship when they get sick or need medical attention.

Earlier this month, the Ministry of Finance announced the selection of Bahamas-based ColinaImperial Insurance Ltd. as the private sector partner to assist in the management and administration of its health insurance operations over the next five years. ColinaImperial will be responsible for recruiting and training Turks and Caicos Islanders to enable full handover of NHIP operations within five years.

An independent Board of Directors that will oversee the NHIB is currently being constituted, and the director’s names will be released shortly.

A copy of the NHIP Bill has been posted in the June 12, 2009 issue of the gazette, and is available on the NHIP website at http://www.tcinhip.tc/
