Letter: Anyone remember when?

Email To Friend Print Version | Dear Sir:
I am a long-time Caribbean American reader of TCI Net News. I read each issue and letter, pertinent to the specific problems in TCI currently with a combination of dismay and a “what if” feeling.
I distinctly remember some years ago, there was a much talked- about proposal by some in Canada and TCI to be annexed and become one nation. It was gaining some steam. Then there was an interview given by M. Misick, the then Chief Minister/Premier, to a Canadian newspaper or a radio station. In that interview he seemed to let all of the air out of movement to unite with Canada.
His reasoning seemed as if he had the best plans for the country, all of the well-worn rhetoric, but I guess he had plans alright, plans for himself and his friends, not the people of TCI. I really think that if the annexation had gone through, there would be no constitutional problems as there are currently. I am of the opinion that although there would be other types of problems, the general welfare of the islands would be better than it is currently.

U N Owen: If that annexation had gone through, the Canadians, instead of the Brits, would be responsible for the debts incurred by Misick and crew. Even if the Misick government had never been elected, there would be moaning here about Canadian colonialism! The Canadian masters would then have been the source of all our problems! |
